On October 17, 2009, Morgan Harrington, at the time 20 and a student of Virginia Tech, was attending a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville had left the venue and was denied re-entry into the event due to the no re-entry policy. Morgan was later that evening abducted and killed with her remains being found by a farmer in Albemarle County a few months later. Just shy of two years of Morgan’s disappearance and murder, her mother Gil Harrington filed last week in Roanoke County Circuit Court a $3.5 million lawsuit against the security company that denied her daughter re-entry to the event. The defendant named is Regional Marketing Concepts Inc. d/b/a RMC Events.
The lawsuit includes allegations, “As a result of the defendant’s failure and refusal to allow plaintiff’s decedent to re-enter the arena, or report her attempt to do so, plaintiff’s decedent was left isolated and alone outside the arena where she was subsequently abducted and murdered.”
Dan Schmitt, president of RMC Events only commented that the “no re-entry” policy even with a valid ticket is standard practice to prevent people from leaving and swapping tickets or trying to smuggle in unauthorized items. Morgan Harrington’s killer has not been found and her family is trying to figure out the events that led to her murder.
