A young woman’s path to stability after a violent crash caused by a commercial driver who ran a red light.
What Happened
On a clear, dry afternoon in Dumfries, a 20-year-old student waited at the intersection of Richmond Highway (formerly Jefferson Davis Highway) and Gordon Boulevard. She prepared to make a routine left turn onto the northbound side of the highway. At 4:21 p.m., her light turned green, and she entered the intersection lawfully.
According to the Prince William County Police Department’s crash report, a well-known commercial delivery vehicle was traveling southbound toward the same intersection. Despite facing a solid red signal, the commercial driver continued through the intersection and struck her vehicle on the driver’s side in a severe T-bone collision. The impact pushed her car down Richmond Highway until both vehicles came to rest facing southbound.
Her airbags deployed. The driver’s side door jammed. A witness opened the passenger door to help her exit safely. Emergency responders then transported her to Sentara Woodbridge for immediate evaluation. The commercial driver was cited for failing to obey the traffic signal. Liability insurers included Broadspire and Old Republic Insurance Company through Gallagher Bassett.
How It Felt
For a young student balancing school, responsibilities, and daily life, the crash created physical challenges and emotional strain that touched every part of her routine. She experienced headaches, memory problems, dizziness, confusion, sensitivity to light and noise, and widespread muscular pain. She also suffered a left-arm wound. Her sleep became disrupted, and focusing on schoolwork became significantly harder.
She worried about falling behind academically. The effort required to attend medical appointments and manage symptoms was overwhelming. Dealing with commercial insurance representatives added pressure she didn’t feel equipped to handle.
She needed someone who would help her feel heard, respected, and supported through the difficult months ahead.
Our Approach
Referred by another attorney, she came to Parrish Car Accident & Personal Injury Law Firm seeking clarity, communication, and support. Our team began by listening, really listening, to her experience and how the crash had reshaped her daily life.
We obtained and reviewed the Prince William County Police Department’s findings, which clearly established that the commercial delivery vehicle failed to stop for the red light. We took over all communication with the commercial insurers, Broadspire and Old Republic Insurance Company via Gallagher Bassett, so she no longer had to manage those stressful interactions.
Next, we organized her medical records, documenting her traumatic brain injury symptoms, pain complaints, and functional limitations. We mapped out how the crash affected her ability to manage her full-time studies, rest, and daily routine.
When insurers questioned the severity or duration of her symptoms, we responded based on facts, records, and the real-life impact the crash had on her. We made sure her voice stayed central throughout the process, and we kept her informed in plain language at every step.
The Outcome
Through diligent preparation and consistent advocacy, we achieved a $155,000 settlement, a result that helped restore stability and gave her the space to focus on healing. She felt validated, supported, and relieved that someone had finally taken the pressure off her shoulders.
The outcome addressed her medical needs and provided the foundation she needed to move forward in school and daily life at a pace that respected her recovery. She regained a sense of control and hope for the future.
