Pelvic Mesh Implants

On July 13th, 2014 an Alert was issued by the FDA stating that serious complications associated with vaginal mesh/bladder slings for transvaginal POP repair are not rare. In fact, the FDA said that they have received thousands of voluntary reports from patients, friends or doctors detailing complications occurring as a result of the vaginal mesh/bladder sling. At least 10 of the reports resulting in death of the patient. Studies estimate that the actual rate of injury is likely to significantly increase. More than 500,000 of these types of procedures are performed annually. According to reports made to the FDA there could be tens of thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths.

More than a half-million women undergo surgery for pelvic organ collapse, also called prolapse, or incontinence each year. About 75,000 women had prolapse surgery with mesh inserted through the vagina in 2011, and more than 200,000 women had the procedure for incontinence. Between 2008 and 2010 the FDA received more than 1,500 reports of complications from women undergoing vaginal prolapse surgery with mesh. This number is up 500 percent from the prior three years.

Surgeons began using mesh to repair hernias in the 1950s, and over the next 40 years they began using mesh for women’s health conditions. The FDA cleared the first mesh for prolapse in 2002, but because it was similar to materials that had been used for decades it did not have to undergo human testing.

The most common side effects occur when the mesh does not adhere properly and will work its way through the vaginal wall, causing chronic pain, infection, bleeding, pain during intercourse, urinary problems, and exposure of the mesh through the vagina. It can also work its way inside damaging the liver, bladder and other internal organs.

Once implanted the mesh is not easy to remove. Removing it may require over a dozen additional surgeries to try to remove it all. There is no guarantee that all of it can be removed.

Virginia Statue of limitations for filing a personal injury claim for damages from serious complications associated with vaginal mesh/bladder slings is two years.

If you have had injuries because of vaginal mesh surgery you will need to contact a transvaginal mesh attorney. Seeking legal representation is very important. The Manufacturers who are responsible for the making and distribution of these products will not settle with you. You will need a personal injury lawyer to handle your case and to obtain a viable settlement for your injuries and potential additional medical bills.
