Assembly Examining Bill To Allow Virginia Professors Bar Membership

Assembly Examining Bill To Allow Virginia Professors Bar Membership

The General Assembly is examining a bill that would allow university law professors membership to the Virginia State Bar, and thus the capability to practice law, reports Virginia Lawyers Weekly.

Law professors would have to have been practicing law full-time for at least five of the last seven years, and their licenses would expire when the professors stop teaching law full-time at the institution.

The bill made it through the Senate in 2012, but was dismissed by the House committee. The Senate Courts Committee cleared another version of the bill on Wednesday in a 12-3 vote.

Virginia law professors are watching the bill closely and are eager for the opportunity to enter the Bar. We’ll keep you updated as this story progresses.
