A fatal hit-and-run accident has left a motorcyclist dead in Fairfax County after being struck by a tractor-trailer, reports CBS.
The accident occurred on April 30 at around 4:30 a.m. when Virginia State Police were called to Interstate 95 at the 165-mile marker in what is reportedly a hit-and-run crash. The victim, 68-year-old Timothy E. Halpin, was driving north on the I-95 when he lost control of his BMW 1200 motorcycle. His motorcycle slid into the left shoulder while Halpin entered into the center lane and was fatally hit by a tractor-trailer.
The trailer-tractor then fled the scene of the accident and witnesses are unable to provide a description of the vehicle.
Statistics from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles conclude that the number of motorcyclists in the state is at an all time high, with 197,000 registered in 2012. Accidents are also up, with a 14 percent increase in motorcycle accidents from 2009-2012.
In 2012 there were 2,429 motorcycle accidents in the Commonwealth that left 78 people dead. In Fairfax County, motorcycle crashes were up 30 percent from 2011 to 2012, going from 183 to 242.

Chesterfield, VA – July 30 – A local highway was temporarily shut down after an early morning car accident on Monday.
According to official reports by WRIC.com, the accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Interstate 95 south.
Police are not sure how many vehicles were involved in the crash or if anyone received injuries as a result.
The highway remained closed until about 7:45 a.m. Officials are advising drivers to expect delays.

Chesterfield, VA – June 16 – A fatal tractor-trailer accident left one person dead and two others hospitalized Saturday afternoon.
The collision occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Interstate 95 south near the Willis Road exit, reports NBC12.com.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said one person was dead at the scene and two others were taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
The extent of their injuries has not yet been reported.
Officials said I-95 south is closed temporarily while crews clean up the scene. Drivers should expect major delays.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction team is assisting police officers with investigations of the crash at this time.
