Pedestrian accidents are particularly serious because there is a high chance of serious injury, or even death.
Today, Parrish Law Firm, PLLC is here to offer a few tips to avoid pedestrian collisions, whether you’re walking on the street or driving on the road.
- Follow traffic signals
The walk/don’t walk signs gauge whether you should cross the street or not. The signals are programmed to give you just enough time to cross the road. If the Do Not Walk sign is flashing, you probably don’t have enough time to make it across the street and should not start crossing.
- Stay alert
Continue to watch for traffic as you are crossing the street. Always look both ways before crossing, and make sure there aren’t any vehicles making a turn as you cross. Waiting a few seconds before stepping off the curb could prevent an accident.
- Watch your children and pets
Children or animals can sometimes run off into the middle of the street. Be mindful of where your child or pet is at all times, and make sure they don’t take off while you aren’t looking.
- Avoid distractions
Talking on the phone, texting, or looking up directions while driving could have dangerous consequences. If you need to make a phone call or look up directions, pull over on the side of the road until your conversation is over or you figure out where to go.
- Yield to pedestrians
Before making a turn into an intersection, make sure there are no pedestrians crossing or about to cross. Do not assume the pedestrian can see you and will stop for you.
- Follow the speed limit
Drive at a pace that allows you to be aware of your surroundings. Slow down while driving through intersections and always come to a stop at stop signs.
